Learning A New Language: Duolingo

IMG_5241

Hello fellow travelers! I wanted to take a moment to sidetrack from adventures today to talk about learning new languages. I think one of the greatest things about travel is soaking up the culture of where you are going. Language is a big part of that and I wish I had taken more time to learn additional ones.

After multiple years of Spanish in school and a short period of time learning French and Latin I know very little of any other language besides English. On and off throughout the years I’ve attempted to learn new languages but ultimately haven’t stuck with it.

One of my friends introduced me to the app Duolingo which actually has made learning a language FUN!!! It incorporates visual pictures, silly characters, and reinforcement of previous lessons. The addition of goal setting and reminders really makes it an awesome app. I actually feel accomplished after using it.

I’m ready to finally challenge myself to stick with it. I’m currently on a 5 day streak of learning French and Spanish. My goal is to complete a straight 30 days of practicing to start.

Is anyone else out there learning a new language? What process, app, book, or experience has helped you learn? Would love to hear from you!

  1. Duolingo is great! My Swedish boyfriend introduced me to it, as he used it to help him with English. Now I am using it to learn Swedish. I only recently discovered that when you use it on a computer instead of just the app, you can also use the microphone to say words/sentences and you also have access to more notes and information. It’s so good!
